Update from Ken: November 2016

Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art has been traveling as 35 pieces from the Landfillart Collection for over a year now. The Mid-America Arts Alliance/Exhibits USA has been successfully touring the US with a select group of works, taken from the group that was exhibited in Winchester, VA at the Museum of the Shenendoah Valley from September 2014-March 2015. Most recently, Second Time Around made stops in Kansas City, MO, Tifton, GA and had a very successful exhibition in Landfillart’s hometown area, at Marywood University in Scranton, PA (through December 16th 2016).

These works of art will continue to travel through October of 2018 with upcoming exhibitions in Texas and California. You can view the touring schedule here: http://eusa.org/exhibition/second-time-aroundthe-hubcap-as-art/

There are still a few available dates on the tour schedule. If there is a venue in your area that would be interested in hosting Second Time Around, please direct them to Exhibits USA’s website using the link above.

Update from Ken: 12-8-15

Larry Carroll Cropped

This update comes with a heavy heart as we regretfully inform our Landfillart family of the loss of one very special member, Larry Carroll of Hermosa Beach, CA recently passed away. His initial contribution to the Landfillart project, Egg in Space, was only the start of the dedication of time and talent that he would lend to our cause. His artwork was included in the exhibition at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in September of 2014 in more ways than one. The 60-second promotional video, as well as the longer feature film that was created for Second Time Around, were both great evidence of his work and talent. His death is a great loss to everyone who knew him. Larry will be greatly missed by many, including us here at The Landfillart Project, the art community and the entertainment industry. Our sincerest condolences to his family in this time of mourning.

Update from Ken: November 2015

The next phase in The Landfillart Project is underway!! We have been working with The Humanities Exchange to create an ongoing series of travelling exhibitions featuring selections from The Landfillart Project.

The Humanities Exchange, founded in 1981, is a non-profit organization that serves as an advisory and source of information on international exhibition exchange and facilitates the touring of exhibitions among museums in Europe, Asia, Canada and the United States. As an international organization, it assists a worldwide audience of museums, art centers, universities, libraries, corporations, foundations and other cultural organizations, and the fields of interest include the visual, history, science – all of the humanities disciplines.

The travelling exhibitions facilitated by The Humanities Exchange are in addition to the 35 pieces that are about to begin their journey with the Mid-America Arts Alliance. The first group of 70 recycled hubcaps have been selected from The Landfillart Collection by The Humanities exchange. These artworks will be part of an exhibition called On The Road Again: Celebrating America’s Love Affair with the Automobile and will begin their travels in mid-2016 and will continue touring for about 2-3 years, making stops at 8-10 museums, primarily in North America.

Selected artists have been notified that their work has been chosen to travel. Congratulations to those artists! If your piece has not been chosen this time, not to worry, we will continue to work with The Humanities Exchange in creating travelling groups from The Landfillart Collection so stay tuned!

Update from Ken: June 2015

It has been pretty quiet around here since Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art closed at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. Not to worry though, we are gearing up for the next adventure! An abbreviated version of Second Time Around (35 pieces) will be on tour starting 11/10/2015 through 10/20/2018 with ExhibitsUSA, a division of Mid-America Arts Alliance. Also, we have partnered with a marketing company in an effort to expand the touring abilities of The Landfillart Collection, in part or as a whole, and we have some very exciting venue possibilities!

We would also like to congratulate one of our Landfillart Artists on a great accomplishment. Maya Freelon Asante was featured in the June issue of Cosmopolitan magazine as one of “five of the most badass female artists in the biz”! Great job Maya!!

Stay tuned for more exciting news!

Our premier showing of a selection of objects from The Landfillart Collection took place on September 7, 2014 at The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester, VA. A preview reception was held on September 6, 2014.

Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art welcomed record breaking crowds at the preview as well as the opening day! Many contributing artists were in attendance including three international artists. The exhibition will be open through March 1, 2015.

Update from Ken: June 5, 2014

Today, World Environment Day, the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley is emailing artists whose works have been included in Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art, opening September 7! Today’s notifications are a courtesy so artists may make travel plans; the list of artists as a whole (287 artists representing every U.S. state and 35 additional countries) will be announced very close to opening day to generate the most excitement then! Watch this website and that of the MSV (www.theMSV.org) over the next four months for more details and to see the great marketing video produced and donated by film director and fellow Landfillart artist Larry Carroll. Congratulations all!

One final note: if your email address has changed since you submitted your artwork, you may not hear this news today; we continue to search for contact information for some artists and hope to contact everyone as quickly as possible.

Update from Ken: May 1, 2014

We are still in the process of “completing” the Landfillart collection of 1,041 art projects. We have received over 1,000 completed projects (which can all be seen in the “Gallery of Metal Canvases”) and hope to see the balance within 90 days!!

Update from Ken: April 28, 2014

The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) has asked me to provide an update about “Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art”. To allow consideration of as many artists as possible, the selection process is being kept open longer than anticipated when I wrote my last update. The selection process is close to completion. The actual “major announcement” will now take place closer to the opening on September 6/7, to concentrate publicity closer to that opening date and encourage people to see the exhibiton.

MSV staff will, before long, start the process of contacting close to 300 artists whose artworks have been selected for inclusion in the exhibition. The process of contacting everyone could require several weeks. Meanwhile, preparations for the exhibition are in high gear and contacts to “long lead” media are underway. We are now a little more than four months from opening, so be sure to check back for more updates!

Update from Ken: Earth Day 2013

Today the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) (www.theMSV.org) in Winchester, Virginia, announced that Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art will open on September 5, 2014! This exhibition will feature 270 Landfillart objects, and IT WILL BE SPECTACULAR! (I’ve seen the plans.) But there’s more. Beginning in 2015, if prospective museum venues show enough interest, Exhibits USA (www.eusa.org) will tour 35 of these objects across the United States! WOW! The 35 artists in the proposed national tour are being announced today (see news release) to allow museums across the country enough time to book the tour. Meanwhile, the MSV is finalizing the artists to be included in the spectacular opening exhibition and will be contacting the selected artists over the next weeks. Today’s announcement is taking place in order to launch the marketing campaign for the touring exhibition; the major announcement about the exciting opening exhibition will take place one year from now, on Earth Day 2014.

Update from Ken on Selecting the Traveling 35:
The MSV museum team and four senior faculty members from the Department of Art of Marywood University considered artistic value, appeal, and message. Geographic representation was a factor, too. A huge number of objects were simply too big or too fragile to travel. The MSV project manager commented that selecting just 270 objects from more than 900 in the Landfillart Project was one of the most difficult tasks of her long museum career.

Update from Ken: February 1, 2013 Exciting News:The very first exhibit of the Landfillart Collection will take place in September of 2014. This “very prestigious” Museum will choose approximately 230 pieces of art from our collection. The official announcement, by their marketing department, will take place on April 22, 2013…..EARTH DAY. Stay tuned.

Update from Ken March 19, 2012: Since the beginning of this year our collection has been enhanced by art contributions from Japan to California, from Florida to Australia. Over 850 completed projects have been received and can be viewed by clicking on Gallery of Metal Canvases. Our goal is 1041 completed projects. Note: Professional artists interested in joining the Landfillart Project may still contact me at Ken@landfillart.org

Update from Ken June 26, 2011 WOW! On June, 1, 2011, the Associated Press featured a wonderful wire service news story nationwide about our international landfillart project. Our story was featured in hundreds of newspapers nationwide — and hundreds of broadcast television news stories around the country. Everyday, I am receiving requests from artists around the world to contribute to our international project. Note: Artists interested in being part of our project may still contact me at Ken@landfillart.org

Update from Ken: February 12, 2011 “What’s the latest???” More than 700 art projects have been completed and received! All these wonderful creations can be viewed on our website. More than 200 additional projects are being worked on!  And yes, I personally unpackage or uncrate every single piece of art that arrives! Is this work? No!! Just excitement.

Update from Ken: March 24, 2010 Landfillart Trivia! Now that the Landfillart Gallery has become so extensive, a question often asked of me is: what are the largest and smallest pieces in the collection? That is such an interesting question because it’s so difficult to tell proportions from the photos on this website.

The largest piece, “The Raven,” is by Pattie Young of New Plymouth, Idaho. It stands over 7 feet tall.

The smallest piece, “Au Coeur Du Monde,” is by Bertrand Sallard from LaTagniere, France. This piece is under 6 inches in diameter.

Both are truly phenomenal works of art.

I’ve been so busy working on this project, contacting potentional artist, answering email from current artists and keeping in touch with past artists that I’ve fallen behind on updating everyone on this page. My apologies!
