Island Memories

Ewell, Maryland

Laureen views her work as a tool for interpreting the journey of her life. Years ago she was introduced to the word ‘Livskunstner’ a Norwegian word, which means “Artist of Life.” Laureen lives on an island with a little post office, a one teacher school house (PK-7), a fuel dock, a one lemon and two gallons of milk on the shelf grocery, and in the summer a small diner. Everything comes over on the boat. She creates art from the ideas and objects around her. Laureen uses old wood frames windows for her mosaics, and considers scrounging around the dump an artist’s date.

“Even though I live isolated and do art alone there are many others who share my passion.”Laureen Watjen
