Stuart is a native of Connecticut but lived most of his life in San Francisco, California. He served in the Marine Corps and completed his graduate studies at Stanford. His PhD dissertation research took him to Bogota Columbia where he lived for a year. He began an electronics business from which he retired to become an art student.
